Latin Name: Ginkgo biloba L.
Synonyms: ginkgo; ginkgo biloba; fossil tree; maidenhair tree; Japanese silver apricot; bai guo ye.
Botany: Ginkgo known as the Maidenhair Tree, is a unique species of tree with no close living relatives. The tree is widely cultivated and introduced, since an early period in human history, and has various uses as a food and traditional medicine. Ginkgo seeds have been used in traditional Chinese medicine whole medical system that originated in China. More recently, ginkgo leaf extract has been used to treat a variety of ailments and conditions, including asthma, bronchitis, fatigue, and tinnitus (ringing in the ears).

Cautions: Uncooked ginkgo seeds contain a chemical known as ginkgotoxin, which can cause seizures. Consuming large quantities of seeds over time can cause death. Ginkgo leaf and ginkgo leaf extracts appear to contain little ginkgotoxin.
