Methyl nicotinate is an active ingredient of a number of veterinary preparations intended for topical application as a rubefacient for the treatment of a variety of diseases, such as respiratory disease, vascular disorders, and rheumatoid disorders in cattle and horses. Methyl nicotinate is a skin irritant in man, in particular producing vasodilatation. A few patients who applied liniments containing methyl nicotinate and other components suffered adverse reactions including faintness, nausea, and pain and skin rashes. Intraperitoneal injection affected liver enzyme activity in mice. No carcinogenicity, genotoxicity or adequate reproductive toxicity studies have been undertaken. "
