There are several non-contact ways available for distance measurement. Of these, one way is to use ultrasonic waves at a frequency of 40 KHz. Ultrasonic transducers measure the amount of time taken for a pulse of sound to travel to a particular surface and return as a reflected echo. The Micro-controller based Ultrasonic Distance Meter implemented here is capable of calculating distances of up to 1 meter. This distance measurement for an object/obstruction is based upon the speed of sound at an ambient temperature of 25°C. The distance hence measured is displayed on a seven segment display for the user to read out.
